Mobile Mathematics Museum in Ethiopia

The Yunus Emre Istitute continues its cultural diplomacy activities with the “Mobile Mathematics Museum” within the framework of the Academic and Scientific Cooperation Project of Turkey (TABIP) launched under the auspices of the Presidency. 

The Yunus Emre Institute, which conducts public and cultural diplomacy activities in various parts of the world to promote Turkey, continues to promote Turkey’s scientific accumulation abroad with the museum set up within the framework of the TABIP project which is designed to develop international scientific and academic cooperation.   

Last February and March, the museum had met with the Syrian children living in temporary accommodation centers in Turkey, reaching 45 thousand children aged between 6-18 years. Then it had moved to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Hungary. 

Ethiopia became the next stop of the Mobile Mathematics Museum which gives an opportunity for thousands of young and creative individuals to see a totally new dimension of mathematics beyond its abstract world.  

Mobile Mathematics Museum Met with African Youth

The Mobile Mathematics Museum was put in display jointly by the Yunus Emre Institute and Thales Mathematics Museum during the Ninth African University Games organized this year in Mekelle University in Ethiopia. There was great interest in the museum in its first day.

Hundreds of visitors visited the museum during the day, allowing university students from 18 African countries to touch mathematics.

The Mobile Mathematics Museum also hosted other important visitors alongside university students. Many local and national media outlets attended the event to see the Mobile Mathematics Museum.  

Rector Prof. Kindeya: This Museum is a Center of Attraction

Rector of Mekelle University Prof. Hiwot Kindeya was one of the visitors of the Mobile Mathematics Museum. He visited the games several times during the day and said: “This is definitely the most attractive stand of the event. The Mobile Mathematics museum became the center of attraction of the Ninth African University Games.”

Vice-Rectors of Mekelle University Dr. Abdulkadir Kedir and Dr. Asbabe Ebeju as well as many deans and institute directors were also among those who visited the Mobile Mathematics Museum.

Mobile Mathematics Museum Will Travel Around in Ethiopia

Prof Dr. Macit Koc, Advisor to the Rector of Mekelle University who also coordinated the Ethiopian leg of the project, said: “We are very happy with the level of interest in our museum in Ethiopia. Our museum will meet with various schools in Ethiopia after the African University Games.” He added that the mobile museum will be made permanent and donated to a school.     

The Mobile Mathematics Museum will be open for visitors during the African University Games which will continue until 6 July.
