"Aleppo - Istanbul / The Guest" Meets Irish Audience

Director Andaç Haznedaroğlu's award-winning film "Aleppo - Istanbul / The Guest," which depicts the tragedy of Syrian refugees, has been screened in Dublin, the capital of Ireland.

The program, which also included the photography exhibition entitled "Immigration through the Lens of Syrian Refugee Women," was conducted at the historic building of the Trinity College Dublin on Thursday, May 16, 2019, in cooperation with Yunus Emre Institute, the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Dublin, the Association for Solidarity with Refugees (MUDEM) and the Trinity College Dublin.

Irish moviegoers and press members, ambassadors of Portugal, Brazil, Pakistan, Greece and Switzerland, and mission representatives of Chile, Colombia and Morocco attended the event, and Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Dublin Levent Burhan, Yunus Emre Institute London Branch Director Mehmet Karakuş, Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (ASAM) General Coordinator İbrahim Kavlak and MUDEM Director Ecem Akarca delivered keynote speeches.

Underlining the fact that immigration is an issue for all of humanity, the speakers pointed out that Turkey's welcoming more than 4 million refugees should set an example for the rest of the world.

After the screening, director Haznedaroğlu answered questions from the audience, and indicated that she was inspired by her own personal story in the film and she became a supporter of civil society organizations that provided assistance to refugees after she had shot the film. Noting that with the film which had come to being after a four-year work, she sought to draw the world's attention to the plight of the victims of the war in Syria, including women and children in particular, she expressed her satisfaction with the sensitive approach exhibited by the Irish people.

The film "Aleppo - Istanbul / The Guest" portrays the war in Syria and the ensuing tragedy through the eyes of a Syrian child and it has received the "Best Film" and "Best Actress" awards at the Silk Road International Film Festival in Dublin and Malmö Arab Film Festival while grabbing the "Avni Tolunay Audience Award" at the International Antalya Film Festival, and the "Best Film and Best Editing Award" at Bosphorus Film Festival.
