A First from Yunus Emre Institute: Turkish Cinema Summer School Started

Turkish Summer School held by Yunus Emre Institute for the 9th time this year hosts 1000 international students from 118 countries in Turkey. In the program realized with the host of 30 universities in 28 provinces around Turkey, participants travel province by province and bland their Turkish knowledge with Anatolian culture.

First Turkish Cinema Summer School, which was designed as a new project within Turkish Summer School programs by Yunus Emre Institute and in which only participants from cinema field take place, started with the supports of General Directorate of Cinema and cooperation of Istanbul Şehir University.

First lesson of Turkish Cinema Summer School, to which 23 young movie maker from 20 countries and which will last 2 weeks began with “Cinema in Turkey” session by participation of Chief of Cinema and Television department of Şehir University Prof. Dr. Nezih Erdoğan on July, 30.  Mentioning about stages of Turkish cinema from past to present, Erdoğan shared building stones of Turkish cinema with different aspects from Yeşilçam (a sobriquet for Turkish film industry) till today’s cinema with the participants.

In the first movie screening and discussion session that will be actualized within the programs, “Cold of Kalandar” movie, of which director is Mustafa Kara, was watched with the participants and then it was assessed. As part of the program, in which producer of the movie Nermin Aytekin participated as a guest, several questions, varying from filmmaking adventure to behind the scene details, of the participants were answered.

Turkish Cinema Enthusiasm on Bosporus

Official opening program of Turkish Cinema Summer School that will be held between July, 30 and 12, August 2018 by Yunus Emre Institute with the cooperation of Istanbul Şehir University and contributions of General Directorate of Cinema, took place on Bosporus.

President of the Institute Prof. Dr. Şeref Ateş, Rector of Istanbul Şehir University Prof. Dr. Peyami Çelikcan, Director Derviş Zaim, Öner Kılıç, Screen Writers Suat Köçer, İhsan Kabil, representatives of embassies, cinema sector, academicians, representatives of culture organizations, press members and lots of prominent invitees participated in summer school opening program, in which 23 young move makers coming from 20 countries take part.

After opening speeches, all guests had the chance to beauties of Istanbul from the Bosporus, which is a natural film plato itself.

Future Movie Makers meets with Turkish Cinema

Important academic members will also give lectures in cinema field in the Summer school, of which academic program was prepared with the supports of Istanbul Şehir University Department of Cinema and Television. Adventure of cinema in Turkey will be handled with several aspects, from cinema’s arrival to Ottoman, to Turkish series, from leader women movie makers to documentary cinema.

Besides presentations of the academicians, within scope of the summer school program meetings of participants with several directors, scenarists, actor/actress, producer and movie critics will be provided and also important works of Turkish cinema will be watched. During summer school, various trips including Mimar Sinan University Department of Cinema and Television, Türker İnanoğlu Foundation Cinema and Theater Museum, Turkish Cinema Studies and SEKA Film Studios will be realized.

Moreover, 1st day of Turkish Cinema Summer School will be Gaziantep city, which is also in “Creative Cities Network” of UNESCO.  Within the program, in which it is aimed to share rich and ancient cultural background of Gaziantep with young movie makers, Culinary Arts Education Center will be visited and make process of Turkish food will be experienced. Also Zeugma Mosaic Museum, which is among one of the world’s important museums in terms of its structural features as well as works inside of it, will be visited.

Meeting and conversation on August, 2 will bt he most exciting part of Turkish Cinema Summer School. Maters of Yeşilçam Türkan Şoray and Ediz Hun will get together with the participants in Istanbul Şehir University Dragos Campus. While masters share their experiences and memories about Turkish Cinema with young movie makers, a motion picture, in which the master two played the lead roles, will be demonstrated as part of the meeting take place in open air.

With “Turkish Cinema Summer School” Yunus Emre Institute aims to make foreign business environments and academicians related to film industry know Turkish cinema on site, to promote relations of foreign students and cinema environments with Turkish cinema sector, to diversify Summer Schools Project and to enhance international cooperation with universities.
