Prof. Dr. Melahat Bilge Demirköz visits Kazakhstan

Prof. Dr. Melahat Bilge Demirköz visited Kazakhstan within the scope of the Academic and Scientific Cooperation Project of Turkey (TABİB), conducted by Yunus Emre Institute under the auspices of the Presidency of the Turkish Republic, and delivered a conference on the "Project for Creating Space Radiation Tests in Turkey: a CERN Cooperation" in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

The conference was organized by Yunus Emre Institute in cooperation with the Astana Embassy of the Turkish Republic at Nazarbayev University, one of the most prominent educational institutions in Kazakhstan, within the framework of the TABİB project which seeks to promote Turkey's scientific potential abroad, increase the number of universities cooperating with Turkey and encourage the exchange of experts. The conference was geared toward scientists, academics and students at Nazarbayev University, and it was attended by Turkey's Ambassador to Astana Nevzat Uyanık, Yunus Emre Institute Astana Branch Deputy Director Almagül İsina, Turkish diplomats as well as numerous scientists, academics and students from various universities.

In her speech, Professor Demirköz noted that they were inspired by famous Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet's line "Either will we take life to stars or will death descend upon the earth" and talked about her experiences by providing stimulating information on the space research conducted at the CERN and in Turkey. At the end of the conference, Professor Demirköz answered questions from the participants. Professor Vassilios Kovanis, the head of the Physics Department of Nazarbayev University, asserted that the conference was extremely helpful and extended his thanks to Professor Demirköz.

Numerous young specialists and scientists from Turkey participate in the space research conducted at the world's leading universities. Prof. Dr. Melahat Bilge Demirköz, an academic member of the Physics Department of the Middle East Technical University (METU), who studied this field at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Oxford University, is a leading Turkish scientist in the area and currently represents Turkey at the CERN.

Demirköz, who is also a member of the Science Board of Yunus Emre Institute, met Kazakhstan Defense Aviation and Space Industry Deputy Minister Timur Shaymergenov and Kazakhstan Aerospace Agency Deputy President Malik Olzhabekov to discuss the potential scientific cooperation between Turkey and Kazakhstan.

Prof. Dr. Melahat Bilge Demirköz will hold various conferences and meetings in the cities of Turkistan and Almaty as part of her visit to Kazakhstan.
