Ramadan Excitement in Doha

During the month of Ramadan, many colorful activities were held at the Yunus Emre Institute in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Turkish customs during the month of Ramadan were included in the event, where there were also iftar programs.

NEY CONCERT AND IFTAR PROGRAM 

A ney concert was performed by Neyzen Sinan Söyler and Tabla Artist Santosh Kulkarni on April 3, 2022 as part of the Ramadan gatherings activities at the Doha Yunus Emre Institute. Afterwards, an iftar program was held for Qatar University students, who have scholarships from the Turkish Maarif Foundation. The Turkish Ambassador to Doha, Dr. M. Mustafa Göksu and Mrs. Kübra Göksu attended the program.

KARAGÖZ AND HACIVAT PERFORMANCE

As part of the Ramadan events, a traditional Turkish shadow play called “Karagöz Travels Istanbul” was performed at the Yunus Emre Institute building in Doha and the Turkish Ministry of National Education Turkish School in Qatar under the auspices of the Turkish Embassy in Doha.

The event started with Doha Yunus Emre Institute Director Prof. Ömer Özkan’s opening speech. In the event held on April 6, 2022 at the Doha Yunus Emre Institute building, the guests were given a brief presentation about Karagöz and Hacivat. Afterwards, Hayalî Cemal Fatih Polat performed the Karagöz play, which he wrote and directed himself, titled "Karagöz Travels Istanbul". Aiming to introduce Istanbul, the play’s summary is as follows: Karagöz and Hacivat decide to go to Istanbul. While visiting the German Fountain, Galata Tower, Maiden's Tower and many other places in Istanbul, Karagöz encounters the most important and world-famous artists of Turkish culture.

At the end of the program, a Karagöz and Hacivat workshop was held for the children who watched the play with enthusiasm. Each child designed their own interpretation of Karagöz in the workshop.

The second Karagöz play was performed on April 7 at the Turkish Ministry of National Education Turkish School in Qatar. Turkish Ambassador to Doha Dr. M. Mustafa Göksu and Education Counselor Mustafa Adaş attended the event. During the event, photographs and videos were taken by the filming crew of the "Years of Culture" project, run by the Qatar Museums Institution. Turkish Ambassador to Doha Dr. M. Mustafa Göksu and Hayalî Cemal Fatih Polat were interviewed. Posts promoting the Karagöz culture will be shared on the website “Years of Culture” and on social media.

 

"RAMADAN IN OUR CULTURE" CONFERENCE AND IFTAR PROGRAM 

On April 7, 2022, at the Doha Yunus Emre Institute building, Qatar University Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. İbrahim Ethemoğlu hosted a conference called “Ramadan in Our Culture”. The program highlighted the significance of the month of Ramadan in Turkish culture. Afterwards, an iftar program was organized with Qatari and Turkish students studying at Qatar University.

Education Counselor of the Turkish Embassy in Doha Mustafa Adaş attended the program.

 

OUD CONCERT AND IFTAR PROGRAM

On April 16, an Oud Concert and Iftar Program were held at the Doha Yunus Emre Institute building. The oud concert was performed by Muharrem Kazım Dinç, a student at Qatar University. Turkish Ambassador to Doha Dr. M. Mustafa Göksu and his wife Mrs. Kübra Göksu attended the iftar program. In the program, Qatar University students, Doha Institute students and Turkish citizens residing in Qatar came together.

 

CULTURE AND LITERATURE DISCUSSION

The program called "Culture and Literature Discussion" was held on April 25, 2022, with the participation of Internal Affairs Counselor of the Turkish Embassy in Doha Lütfi Çiçek as a speaker.

The program started with Doha Yunus Emre Institute Director Prof. Ömer Özkan’s opening speech. Later, Lütfi Çiçek made a presentation about three works he wrote and answered the questions from the participants. Turkish Ambassador to Doha Dr. M. Mustafa Göksu also made a speech.

At the end of the program, Lütfi Çiçek signed his books “From the Flower’s Mouth”, “Commissioner Yiğit” and “Interpol with Unknown Aspects” and presented them to the guests as gifts.
