TABIP and ASAM Contribute to Solution of Problems of Access of Refugees Living in Turkey to Higher Education

The "Workshop on Access of Refugees Living in Turkey to Higher Education" has been organized jointly with the Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers (ASAM) within the scope of the Academic and Scientific Cooperation Project of Turkey (TABIP), conducted by Yunus Emre Institute under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey.

During the workshop hosted by the Institute with the participation of 70 people from academic, scientific and social circles in Turkey between November 18 and 19, 2019, a road map on what can be done has been created with the outputs on the problems faced by the refugees living in our country in having access to higher education and integration with social life.

In his paper entitled "ELITE DIALOGUE Project Research Findings: Trends and Expectations of Young Syrians About Education," Elite Dialogue Project Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Armağan Erdoğan discussed the aims and expectations of young Syrians concerning their integration with our country's education system, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Başak Yavcan, a faculty member from the TOBB University of Economics and Technology, made a presentation on the same subject.  

The title of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayselin Yıldız, a faculty member from Yaşar University, was "REFREC-TR Project Research Findings: Recognition of Qualifications and Country Comparisons," in which she described the capacities of the countries, the number of existing refugees living the countries and the qualifications of these refugees.

Süheyla Alazamah from Gaziantep University and Ziad Othman, who graduated the Faculty of Law at the University of Damascus talked about the problems and experiences of Syrian students in participating in higher education in Turkey, while Bahara Murardi, who had MBA from the Department of Management at Ege University, focused on the participation of Afghan students in higher education in Turkey and their equivalence procedures.

Yeliz Öz Tok from the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB) gave information on the YTB's projects concerning the refugees and immigrants. The first day of the workshop ended with round table meetings.

The second day of the workshop started with the paper from Syrian students in Karabük University: "Case of Socialization: Bilingual Story Narration." Based on the stories told, it was stressed that linguistic differences should not disrupt semantic integrity.

The outputs on the problems and solutions identified during the round table meetings conducted on the first day were discussed and proposed solutions to the challenges faced by the refugees living in Turkey in accessing higher education were expressed.
