Turkish Archery on the World Stage: the Kuala Lumpur stop

Several "Turkish Archery on the World Stage" events have been organized in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, as per of the Kemankeş (Archer) Project, organized jointly by Yunus Emre Institute and the Archers' Foundation in 16 countries with a view to promoting the traditional Turkish archery in the international arena and contributing to intercultural dialogue by raising archers in the field.

The Kemankeş Project, which has been highlighting the cultural and historical aspects of the traditional Turkish archery with the training courses in 16 countries as well as various cultural and artistic activities, has organized a series of events, titled "Turkish Archery on the World Stage," in Kuala Lumpur after Amman and Belgrade.

At the "Inventions of the Golden Age," a great organization held by the Idrissi International School, one of Malaysia's best schools, this year's guest was Turkey and this year's theme was the Turkish archery.

As a festival of science and culture, the Inventions of the Golden Age adopts a student-centered take on the relationship between traditions and technology in the transforming world. The organization held on November 17, 2018 was attended by Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Kuala Lumpur Merve Kavakçı and President of World Ethnosport Confederation and Member of the Board of Trustees of the Archers' Foundation Bilal Erdoğan.

Erdoğan delivered a keynote speech at the program. "Our ancestors used this technology to tear down the walls that imprisoned people to darkness. Today, we are supposed to use technology for the same purpose," Erdoğan said. He underlined that the inclusion of traditional Turkish archery in the curriculum of the Idrissi International School would bring Turkey and Malaysia closer.

During the program, a short documentary film titled "Traditional Turkish Archery" was aired and a photography exhibition titled "Kemankeş Turkish Archery" was held and the Idrissi International School students exhibited their archery skills. In addition, historian/author Erkan Göksu's book, "Okla Yükselen Millet," which was translated into English as "The Rising Nation With Arrow", was also promoted.

In Malaysia, horseback archery is a living tradition, and the Kemankeş Project's activities were kicked off in November 2017. The traditional Turkish archery has attracted a great deal of interest in a short time in the country. Four Malaysian trainers received intensive training at the Archers' Foundation in Istanbul in November 2017 and October 2018 sessions. Approximately 50 trainers received training at the traditional Turkish archery courses held Yunus Emre Institute's Kuala Lumpur branch in January 2018. With a protocol signed on September 25, 2018, the "Traditional Turkish Archery" course made into the curriculum of the Idrissi International School, and more than 100 students took it as an elective course in the academic year 2018-2019. In the finals held on October 19, 2018, Malaysian archers Azharul Abdul Aziz and Erina Emelina Ismail from got the first place among their rivals from 16 countries at the World Mix Finals of the Kemankeş Project.

At the "Turkish Archery on the World Stage" program, films were screened, and performance shows were held, and there were exhibitions and book launches, and, at the same time, the Idrissi International School, the Archers' Foundation and Yunus Emre Institute signed the Kemankeş Project Cooperation Protocol. The protocol aims to enhance the project's reach and facilitate the training of archers for international contests. The Kemankeş Project will undertake training courses and various activities on the traditional Turkish archery in 25 countries in 2019.
