Yunus Emre Institute hosts the panel on teaching Turkish to adult immigrants and refugees

The panel titled "Teaching Turkish to Adult Immigrants and Refugees: New Tools, New Approaches" was hosted by Yunus Emre Institute. 

Held in the meeting hall in Ulus, Ankara, on Monday, October 15, 2018, the panel was attended by Institute President Prof. Dr. Şeref Ateş and the experts, academics and Institute lectures who are receiving the Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language course. During the panel, the guide "Yabancı Dil Olarak Türkçe İlk Kazanımlar İçin Başvuru Rehberi: A1 Öncesi Düzey" (Reference Guide for Turkish as a Foreign Language First Achievements: Pre-A1 Level" was introduced.

Institute President Prof. Dr. Ateş delivered a keynote speech, stressing that they will continue to lend support to scientific studies in the field of teaching Turkish as a foreign language.  "This guide has been prepared as part of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Anyone who wants to learn Turkish can do it with an easier and faster way," he said.

Then, Prof. Dr. Jean-Claude Beacco, from Universite de la Sorbanne nauvelle Paris 3, delivered his assessments regarding the Council of Europe (CoE) Reference Guides Programme. Prof. Dr. Beacco pointed out that a method with a communicative intent should be employed in order to equip immigrants with the skills they will need in social life. "I believe the book has been written with a realistic method," he said.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yusuf Polat, one of the academics who wrote the book, explained the scope and purpose of the book. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Polat, from Kırıkkale University, said: "In writing the book teaching Turkish to foreigners, we intended to disseminate the information in a concrete manner. By involving our young people in the project and working closely with experienced colleagues, we believe we have come up with a good book."

To familiarize the audience with the sections of the book, Ali Osman Durmuş, from Ankara University, Prof. Dr. Dilek Peçenek, from Ankara University, and Prof. Dr. Dursun Köse, from Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, made introductory remarks about, respectively, "General and Specific Concepts," "Teaching Sound and Writing Systems," and Assessment, Evaluation and Exams" and discussed their proposals regarding the work in the field of teaching Turkish as a foreign language.

It was prepared by Assoc. Dr. Yusuf Polat, Prof. Dr. Dursun Köse, Prof. Dr. Dilek Peçenek and Ali Osman Durmuş, in consultation with Prof. Dr. Jean-Claude Beacco, from the European Language Council, based on the basic needs of adults including immigrants whose mother tongue is not Turkish, and who may or may not be literate and who may have limited or no school past, and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The experts from Yunus Emre Institute's Turkish Education Directorate and Exam Center and the lecturers at the Turkish and Foreign Languages Research and Application Center (TÖMER) of Ankara University contributed to the leveling of the examples in the reference guide, which contains communicative functions belonging to the "Pre-A1 Level" --which can be regarded as an intermediate stage before the A1 level and which is addressed in the CEFR descriptors which were revised in 2017-- as well as vocabulary and linguistic structures used in performing these functions.
