Geometric pattern master of Turkish-Islamic art, Dr. Serap Ekizler Sönmez talked about the importance of geometric patterns in Islamic civilization at the conference held at Vienna Yunus Emre Institute (YEE) on March 1st, 2024.

A conference titled "What Geometric Patterns Say About Islamic Civilization" was held in the conference hall of Vienna YEI in Austria.

In his speech here, Sönmez evaluated the geometric patterns in the Turkish world, extending from Central Asia to Anatolia, and their effects on Islamic civilization.

Patterns Carry Deep Intellectual Meanings

Dr. Serap Ekizler Sönmez emphasized that geometric patterns interact with each other to create various designs, and that these designs have meanings not only on the surface but also in intellectual depth.

Pointing out that the geometric patterns that emerged in different parts of the Islamic geography present traces of a common civilization, Sönmez said that the focus should be on a mind-based understanding rather than a mystical perspective.

Sönmez stated that the fact that similar examples are encountered all over the Islamic world is an indicator of the imagination of the universe.

Sönmez used the following expressions: "If we look at geometric patterns only as designs, they will be very shallow. This should be seen as clues of a civilization." Sönmez said that it can be seen that design and science are in perfect harmony in geometric patterns.

Sönmez stated that once the mathematical mechanism hidden behind this art is understood, an infinite number of different designs can be created, and that works done without understanding this scientific truth lead to wrong results.

Sönmez organized workshops for two days at Vienna YEE with participants who are interested in geometric designs.
