Nowruz Fervor in Estonia

A Nowruz celebration was organized on 18 March 2018 at 6 pm by the Azerbaijani Cultural Association. As in previous years, hundreds of people came together in the Nowruz celebration this year which has been organized uninterruptedly since 1998 with the participation of Turkish and sister communities. The Nowruz celebration in 2018, also supported by the Yunus Emre Institute, was attended by the Azeris, Tatars, Turkmens, Kazaks, Bashkirs, Uzbeks and the Turkish citizens living in Tallinn. Estonians also showed great interest in the celebration program.

The Turkish Ambassador in Tallinn, Ms. Hayriye Kumaşçığlu, who also participated in the celebrations, underlined in her opening speech the importance for the Turkish and sister communities living in Estonia to come together in such common feasts and expressed her wish that the celebrations would continue in the atmosphere of unity and solidarity.

Ms. Anne LyReimaa from the Ministry of Culture of Estonia expressed their satisfaction at celebrating the feast together while the Head of the Azerbaijani Cultural Association Mr. Niyazi Haciyev emphasized that Nowruz celebrations occupy an important place not only for the Azerbaijani Turks, but for all the Turkish world. Accordingly, he pointed out the significance for the Turkish and sister communities to come together for common values and stated that such activities strengthened cultural exchanges between generations and communal relationships.

Musical performances and popular dances from the Turkish world were performed in the celebrations. All the guests, old or young, enjoyed the celebrations in which “semeni” herbs were also turned green and painted eggs clinked.
