Yeşilçam's legendary name Hülya Koçyiğit met with fans at Near East University on Tuesday, November 1st in "Turkish Cinema Days" event organized by Yunus Emre Enstitüsü.

As part of the event, the award winning films of Hülya Koçyiğit "Susuz Yaz", "Derman" and "Kurbağalar" were screened. In the bull session held in an intimate environment, participants asked Hülya Koçyiğit questions about Turkish cinema. Hülya Koçyiğit sincerely responded to questions, and shared her memories from Turkish cinema and her life with the fans.

Koçyiğit explained that her career in cinema began at a very young age, and spoke as follows: "I love my profession, cinema is a very effective means of communication, and we understand each other through cinema or try to make sense of it. I got the chance to get better acquainted with my people doing my work. I wanted to become their voice as I spent time with them and made films among them. "

A New Film about Refugees

Hülya Koçyiğit said that a new film project is currently underway she has seriously considered for the past few month and stated that the project is about a critical global issue that is "refugees".

Koçyiğit said that the hypocrisy of Europe, West and so-called advanced civilizations should once more be reminded to humanity and people, expressed the following: "The things we witness makes me think that we need to do something as a Turkish citizen. We see great tragedies. People die to survive. Nobody says 'welcome' wherever they go. What great suffering they are in to leave their homeland behind. The worst thing in the world is probably being stateless. May no one go through this.”

"We Turks take care of them too"

Hülya Koçyiğit added the following: "We Turks also take care of them. We think being humane suits us above all. Embracing the refugees is a manifestation of our humanity. This is a serious issue and we need to work hard. But I will be very happy if we can realise it and I wish I will be successful.”

Actress Koçyiğit stated that every single person is partly a refugee and said, "We arrived I do not know how many years ago, the others a few centuries ago. After all everyone came from somewhere else.”

Director of Nicosia Yunus Emre Enstitüsü Hüseyin Şahin made a speech at the end of the event, and expressed his appreciation to Hülya Koçyiğit. He stated that Koçyiğit's films present slices of life and that he personally experienced this with his observations, underlining the significance of Turkish cinema in this regard.

The students of the Near East University Cinema Club presented Koçyiğit with flowers and she had photographs taken with her fans.
