Yunus Emre Institute, which has been in Tunisia since 2018, continues to host cultural events and hold conference series to promote Turkish culture.

On February 11, 2021, Yunus Emre Institute (YEI) held a conference in Tunisia titled "Maghrib and Ottoman Architecture."

Dr. Süfyan Dayf, an architect and historian, indicated at a conference held at the Yunus Emre Institute center in Tunis that Ottoman architecture influenced the Maghreb nations and that these architectural traces have been preserved to this day.

"TUNISIAN ARCHITECTURE HAS TRACES OF OTTOMAN ARCHITECTURE"

Dr. Dayf stated on the history of Maghrib and Ottoman architecture, "Ottoman Civilization has survived in Tunisia for three centuries. This process was carried out even during the French occupation (1881-1956). As a result, Tunisian architecture has a structure that is reminiscent of Ottoman architecture," he explained.

"We can observe that the Libyan and Algerian mosques built during the Ottoman period adopted the building method of minarets, mihrabs, and domes from Ottoman architecture," Dayf added, pointing out that numerous relics built during the Ottoman period are still standing. By combining with Ottoman architecture, it has kept its own identity with local features."

Tunisian Dayf followed his remarks by saying:

"In Tunisian architecture, the Ottoman architectural style entirely dominates the Mohammed Murad Bey Mosque, which was completed in 1692 with inspiration from Istanbul architecture. Similarly, the Sahib et-Tabii Mosque, completed in 1814, is one of the few examples of Ottoman architecture that has survived to the present day. Tunisia saw an aesthetic and architectural growth in the 18th century that was influenced by Ottoman sultanate architecture.”
