"Reports of the Ottoman Foreign Affairs on the South Caucasus" Book Introduced in Baku

The presentation of the book titled “Reports of the Ottoman Foreign Affairs on the South Caucasus”, published in Turkey with the support of Baku Yunus Emre Institute and prepared for publication by the historian Dr. Telman Nüsretoğlu, was held in the conference hall of our Institute.   The event was held on 28 January 2021 and attended by Turkish Ambassador in Baku Assoc. Prof. Cahit Bağcı and many historians and scientists.

DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN THE OTTOMAN AND SOUTH CAUCASUS ARE COVERED IN THIS BOOK

Selçuk Karakılıç, Baku Yunus Emre Institute Director, stated that the book was published in a significant period of time. Noting that the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan has been completed, Karakılıç emphasized that some of the documents reflected in this book are related to the diplomatic relations between the Ottoman Empire and the South Caucasus, especially Azerbaijan.

Ambassador Assoc. Dr. Cahit Bağcı said that the book not only reveals archival documents that was not examined until now, but it also gives detailed information about the events transpired at that time.

Dr. Telman Nüsretoğlu, who prepared the book for publication, emphasized that the Reports of the Ottoman Foreign Affairs on the South Caucasus were published in Ankara with the support of Baku Yunus Emre Institute, and he also added following words:

ARCHIVES BETWEEN 1852-1914 WERE EXAMINED

“As a result of our long years of research in the Ottoman archives, our book entitled ‘Reports of the Ottoman Foreign Affairs on the South Caucasus’ was published. During the preparation of the book, many valuable archival materials covering the years 1852-1914 were examined. A total of 300 substantial archival documents concerning the region have been published in the book.

THERE IS VALUABLE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARMENIAN QUESTION

Dr. Nüsretoğlu said that the book contains many archival documents about Azerbaijan that are published for the first time and talked about the documents in question as follows:

“Some of the documents are valuable documents on the Armenian question and the history of Armenian terrorism. In addition, the book deals with the aid of the Muslim Solidarity Association led by Hacı Zeynalabdin Tagiyev to Anatolia, the activities of newspapers and magazines in Azerbaijan, exceptional people of the Ottoman Empire such as Ahmed Ağaoğlu, and valuable archival information about the events unfolding in Baku. To sum up, the consulates opened by the Ottoman Empire in the South Caucasus between 1852-1914 are examined extensively in this book for the very first time. In other words, “Reports of the Ottoman Foreign Affairs on the South Caucasus” contains a large number of archival documents about Azerbaijan published for the first time.”
