Belgrade Yunus Emre Institute held a panel on "Serbian in the Ottoman Palace."

One of Belgrade University's professors, Prof. Mirjana Marinkovic, and Prof. Ema Miljkovic, participated in the panel on February 23, 2022.

WITH THE WEDDING OF BAYEZID I AND SERBIAN PRINCESS OLIVERA LAZAREVIC, SERBIA ENTERES THE PALACE

"The Serbian entrée into the Ottoman Palace began with the marriage of Bayezid I and the Serbian princess Olivera Lazarevic, which formed part of the agreement after 1389 Battle of Kosovo," Miljkovic explained.

Marinkovic further asserted that Serbian was often spoken in the Ottoman harem and that some correspondence between the Ottoman Empire and Hungary was conducted in Serbian.

"2. Murat's wife, Serbian princess Maro Brankovic, effectively spoke Serbian at the palace and even helped as a translator in foreign affairs," Milijkovic said.
